Energy-Efficient Elevators for UAE Buildings: A Buyer Guide

Energy-efficient elevator selection should connect equipment specifications with the way a UAE building will operate. Compare annual energy estimates using consistent traffic assumptions, and ask how the proposed configuration fits the project’s building requirements. A list of efficiency features is not a measured saving for the completed building.

Start with the applicable project requirements

Dubai Municipality’s Al Sa’fat green building system includes requirements for new buildings and addresses building performance. Have the project consultant confirm the applicable scheme, edition, rating target and elevator-related requirements. This does not mean every UAE building must use the same drive system or equipment layout.

Record the actual location and approval route. Dubai-specific guidance should not be presented as an identical rule for every emirate.

Compare running and standby energy

Request estimates based on the same rated load, travel, trips, load distribution and operating hours. Include non-running power: controls, lighting and other auxiliaries may continue consuming energy while the lift is not travelling.

  • What is included in the energy estimate, and what is excluded?
  • Are the figures measured, simulated or taken from a reference installation?
  • Which idle and standby modes are enabled, and when do they activate?
  • What traffic pattern and annual operating days are assumed?
  • How will the project team check the assumptions after occupation?

Evaluate optional features on the offered configuration

Ask whether efficient cabin lighting, standby controls and regenerative drives are standard or optional in the quotation. Regeneration depends on the drive design and operating conditions; request the supplier’s explanation of energy recovery rather than applying a generic percentage saving.

Machine-room-less describes machinery placement. It should not be used by itself as evidence of a particular energy class or guaranteed reduction in running cost.

Include comfort, traffic and equipment conditions

Energy objectives should be evaluated alongside passenger waiting time, accessibility and operating requirements. Discuss how control settings affect the proposed building use. Confirm environmental requirements for equipment spaces and identify any ventilation or cooling work that belongs in the building-services scope.

If an energy comparison excludes equipment-space cooling or other associated loads, disclose that boundary. Compare the same boundary for each offer.

Plan verification and operating records

Specify which configuration information, settings and energy reports will be supplied at handover. Ask qualified specialists to plan measurements where needed. After occupancy, compare actual operating patterns with the procurement assumptions before concluding that a difference represents equipment underperformance.
