The dimensions to include in your enquiry
- Usable cabin width and depth
- These describe the space available inside the car. Tell the supplier whether the intended users include someone using a mobility aid or travelling with an accompanying person.
- Clear shaft width and depth
- Record the available internal space and identify whether it is an existing surveyed shaft or a proposed architectural opening. Do not assume that cabin dimensions equal shaft dimensions.
- Clear door opening and landing approach
- Request the offered clear opening and review how users approach, enter and leave the lift at each floor. Identify nearby doors, circulation routes and other obstructions for the designer.
- Pit depth
- Ask the supplier to show the required space below the lowest landing on the project drawing. Describe any constraints known from the building survey.
- Overhead clearance
- Identify the available space above the top served landing and ask how it must be measured for the proposed arrangement. A room ceiling height alone is not a complete elevator layout.
- Travel, stops and entrances
- List the served levels, floor-to-floor heights and the required entrance direction at every stop. Include equipment-space and access provisions shown by the supplier.
Plan around users before choosing the smallest footprint
For a new home, discuss the intended use with the architect before fixing the lift location. For an existing home, arrange a professional survey to establish which options can be considered. Existing photographs and a rough floor plan can help start a conversation, but they cannot establish structural suitability or a final equipment specification.
If wheelchair access is part of the brief, review the complete journey rather than only the nominal car size. Ask the relevant specialists to confirm the entrance, landing approach, usable car space and applicable local requirements. Do not assume that every product described as a home lift satisfies the same accessibility or approval rules.
What about shallow-pit or reduced-overhead products?
Ask for the exact model and configuration, the corresponding drawing and any conditions attached to the proposed solution. Marketing labels such as compact or space-saving do not replace dimensions. Do not copy the pit, overhead or cabin size from another manufacturer’s product into a FUJIHD enquiry as though it were an approved specification.
