It’s not always necessary to have a large shaft or a significant extension to have a home elevator. Modern compact lifts can be fitted to the side of a staircase, inside an unused room, through an existing floor, or in a specially designed lift shaft. The difficulty here is in knowing where and when to take the measurement.
When homeowners are looking for pitless elevators, they tend to only pay attention to the cabin size. The cabin is only the start of the installation, though. Clearing for the supporting structure, guide rails, doors, clearing for the floor opening, electrical equipment, pit or access ramp, and space above the top floor are also required.
This guide details the most common small Home Elevator dimensions; the amount of floor area needed for each type of home elevator and what to look for when obtaining a quotation.
What Do Small Home Elevator Dimensions Include?
A supplier can provide you with a couple of sets of measurements. They do not substitute for each other.
Cabin Dimensions
Cabin dimensions refer to the interior space available in the elevator. This will decide the number of passengers that may travel as well as whether a wheelchair will fit, space will be available for a walking frame, luggage, or shopping.
External Footprint
External footprint is comprised of cabin, rails, frame, safety clearances, and equipment around the lift. It is always greater than the functioning cabin space.
For example, an 800 × 700 mm cabin may have a 1,332 × 930 mm opening on the floor of the cabin for a particular through-floor system. This leaves room for the mast, protection equipment, and operational gear.
Shaft or Floor-Opening Size
Residential elevators usually run inside the masonry, steel, and glass elevator shaft. The thickness and depth of the shaft have to be greater than those of the cabin.
A shaftless or through-floor lift doesn’t require a fully enclosed lift the way a true lift does, but it does require an opening between the floors that is the right size.

These are real product examples, not standard dimensions that apply to every manufacturer. Cibes publishes cabin options beginning at 600 × 700 mm for its pitless Ascenda model, while its C1 Pure cabin lift offers larger sizes starting at 900 × 950 mm.
Stiltz lists an internal footprint of approximately 780 × 673 mm and a floor cut-out of around 1,048 × 810 mm for one of its compact two-person models.
The useful lesson is simple: never plan the building opening around the advertised cabin size alone.
What Is a Practical Compact Villa Lift Size?
A practical compact villa lift size depends on how the elevator will be used.
If there is only one or two standing passengers on the bus, 700 to 900 mm wide in the cabin may be possible, depending upon the door configuration and the length of the cab. Typically, a wheelchair-accessible lift must have a wider or deeper cabin, and provide a proper clear door opening.
ICC A117.1 requires private-residence elevators in accessible dwelling units to provide a minimum clear floor width of 36 in and a minimum clear floor length of 48 in as one accessibility reference. Local adoption criteria and residential requirements vary, so the local authority and lift specialist must advise what is required for a particular project
Also consider who will travel with the wheelchair user. A cabin that fits a wheelchair alone may not comfortably accommodate an attendant.
Are Pitless Home Elevators Really Pit-Free?
A genuinely pitless lift can sit at finished-floor level without a recessed pit. However, “pitless” does not mean that no building work is required.
A through-floor model may still need:
- A floor opening between levels
- Structural support around the opening
- Space for a safety hatch
- A small access ramp or threshold
- Electrical preparation
- Wall or floor finishing
- Clearance for the mast and drive system
The Cibes Ascenda, for example, lists a 0 mm pit and minimum headroom of 2,300 mm. Its smallest cabin is 600 × 700 mm, but the required floor cut-out is 1,132 × 930 mm.
By comparison, the Cibes C1 Pure requires a 100 mm pit, or 120 mm when certain floor finishes are used, together with minimum top-floor headroom of 2,550 mm.
Even products from the same broad category can therefore have very different construction requirements.
Pit and Headroom Requirements for Villa Elevators
Traditional or shafted villa elevators generally need more vertical preparation than through-floor systems.
FujiHD’s home-elevator solution information describes configurations with an optional pit of 150 mm, while the published specification for its FHV-iHOME model lists a pit of at least 600 mm and top-floor height of at least 3,500 mm. These figures relate to different configurations and demonstrate why the exact model must be confirmed before construction begins.
Never instruct a builder to form the pit or shaft using dimensions taken from a general blog post. Final construction should be based on approved, project-specific drawings from the selected supplier.
Door Arrangement Can Change the Required Space
Door placement has a major effect on both cabin usability and shaft size.
Common configurations include:
- Single entry: Passengers enter and leave through the same side.
- Opposite entry: Doors are positioned at the front and rear.
- Adjacent entry: Doors are located on two neighbouring sides.
- Through-car layout: Passengers enter from one side and exit from the other.
A through-car layout can be easier for wheelchair users because it may remove the need to turn inside the cabin. However, it can require a larger opening or deeper shaft.
Door type matters too. Swing doors may suit narrow residential layouts, while automatic sliding doors need additional space for the panels and operating mechanism.
